I have always dreamed of and been fascinated by challenges that push me to go against the flow. Pursuing my graduate studies abroad was one of these dreams from the moment I began my technical education. I love learning new things and broadening my perspective on the world.

This journey began in Pune, India, while I was completing my diploma in Mechanical Engineering. Some of my friends showed interest in pursuing master's degrees abroad, which sparked my curiosity about advanced education. Their motivation and guidance helped me understand my aspirations. During my senior year of my bachelor’s degree, I started preparing my applications for universities in the US, taking required exams, and gathering necessary documents. This process was halted due to COVID-19, which led me to take a job after my bachelor’s degree. However, while working, I continued applying for master’s programs and received offers from several prestigious universities in the United States.

I chose Northwestern University in Chicago for my Master’s in Mechanical Engineering. There were several reasons for this decision. First, I have always wanted to delve into research and explore technological innovation rather than just implementation. Northwestern is renowned for its advanced manufacturing research. Second, the location of Northwestern is ideal, being just 20 minutes from the metropolitan city of Chicago and in the heart of its industrial sector, providing great career opportunities. Finally, with my best friend studying there, it was easier for me to integrate with the student community.

Situated on the shores of Lake Michigan, Northwestern University offers stunning views of downtown Chicago, making it one of the most beautiful campuses in the United States. While not the largest university, it boasts highly reputed and top-ranked programs. The Mechanical Engineering department is ranked 9th globally, the Materials Science department is in the top 3, and the MBA program from the Kellogg School of Management is also highly acclaimed. Notably, Northwestern is one of the few universities in the US that follows a quarter system, with four quarters per year compared to the usual two semesters. This faster pace of learning helps students adapt to a fast-paced environment. My program spans 1.5 years and includes the completion of 12 credits (12 courses).

I am currently in the final year of my master’s program, having completed all my courses. I am now working as a Research Assistant in the Advanced Manufacturing Process Lab at Northwestern University under Prof. Jian Cao. This journey to Northwestern and beyond has been both fascinating and challenging. I have learned a great deal during my application process and my time at Northwestern. The university has helped me make friends and colleagues and introduced me to new technologies in Mechanical Engineering. This experience will always be one of my fondest memories.
