An internship is an integral part of technical education, especially as I ventured toward graduate studies in a different country. Gaining US work experience was essential for me to understand corporate life in the United States.

Upon arriving in the US, I started searching for a summer internship to gain valuable experience. The job market was tough after COVID-19, making the search challenging. I focused on improving my profile by optimizing my LinkedIn profile and upgrading my resume. Finally, at the end of April, I secured an internship at DMG MORI in California.

I began my internship at DMG MORI at the end of June 2023. DMG MORI is located in Davis, a small town near Sacramento, California. This place was new to me and far from my college town in Chicago. I was quite nervous before accepting the offer. However, because Davis is a college town near UC Davis, I found housing easily and arranged my commute by purchasing a bike.

The first few days of the internship were challenging as I adjusted to the new environment. Like all internships, the initial weeks involved completing safety courses and understanding my responsibilities. I was introduced to my incredibly supportive colleagues. The experience was both fun and creative. I met seniors and managers who taught us valuable skills, particularly how to think effectively. This experience provided me with insights into the US work culture and daily operations.

As an Engineering Intern in the Additive Solutions team at DMG MORI, my primary focus was on the development of the third-generation LASERTEC SLM 30 machines, a premium metal additive manufacturing machine. I worked on various projects related to the SLM machine, including rapid prototyping to improve powder dosing efficiency. My work involved using software like PTC Creo, Magics, 3D Slicer, and Ultimaker for CAD modeling and 3D printing.

The internship at DMG MORI taught me many valuable lessons that I proudly apply in my life. I met some of the best people who shared their professional and personal wisdom, which I greatly admire.
